Amul's milk products might soon be available in Israel
What's the story
Amul, ranked as the world's number one cooperative by the International Cooperative Alliance, is looking to expand its global footprint. The company's Managing Director Jayen Mehta announced that they are exploring strategic partnerships with Israeli and other West Asian companies. The move is part of a broader strategy to tap into new markets and increase product availability in Israel, a country with a significant Jewish population.
Market penetration
Amul's global expansion strategy
Speaking to CNBC-TV18 at the India-Israel Business Summit in Tel Aviv, Mehta stressed on the importance of trade agreements for leveraging global markets and removing unreasonable non-tariff barriers. He said that India, as the world's largest milk producer, is set to produce a third of the world's milk by next decade. This growth will play a key role in Amul's international expansion plans.
Operational expansion
Amul's existing operations and future plans in Israel
Mehta highlighted that Amul has been exporting ghee to Israel for a while now. He said the company hopes to boost productivity and cut farmers' operational costs by leveraging advanced Israeli technologies in breeding, feeding practices, agri-tech, and irrigation. The strategy is aimed at making Amul's products more affordable in Israel, thereby increasing its market presence there.
International reach
Amul's global presence and future plans
Amul is looking to expand its geographical reach through partnerships with cooperatives in Europe and the US. Mehta revealed that Amul is the only national dairy player in the US selling fresh milk through cooperatives across 35 states. Despite high duties, exports of dahi, ghee, cheese, and ice creams to America have remained unaffected.
