Emirates fined €180,000 in Italy over passenger health data handling
Emirates just got hit with a €180,000 fine in Italy for not handling passenger health data the right way.
The trouble started when a traveler claimed she was asked to fill out an unnecessary medical form, which led regulators to dig deeper.
Turns out, while airlines can collect some health information for safety and assistance, Emirates didn't clearly explain why or how they were using it.
Italy watchdog faults Emirates privacy practices
Italy's data watchdog called out Emirates for not giving passengers clear privacy details: neither on their website nor through staff.
On top of that, the airline kept people's medical forms for seven years, which authorities said was way too long.
This isn't the first time airlines have been in hot water over data privacy; British Airways and Cathay Pacific have also faced fines recently.
