Ford and Geely discuss sharing factory space and tech
Ford and China's Geely are in discussions about Geely using Ford factory space in Europe, with Ford's Valencia, Spain plant the most likely site, and share some self-driving tech.
This fits the bigger trend of carmakers teaming up to split the huge costs of going electric and getting smarter with software.
EV production in Spain could help Geely dodge EU tariffs
By making EVs in Spain instead of China, Geely would likely avoid steep new EU tariffs (up to 37.6%) on Chinese-made cars.
They've tried similar moves with Renault in Brazil and South Korea, which paid off with a big sales boost for Renault outside Europe.
Ford is also working with Renault on EVs—which could involve cost-sharing.
Geely is looking to enter the US market
Geely is considering bringing its Zeekr or Lynk & Co brands to the US, and could use Volvo's South Carolina plant.
But US laws banning Chinese connected-car tech over security worries could slow things down.
Still, Geely seems pretty upbeat about finding a way into the American market.
