Foreign inflows to Indian data centers fall to $100m monthly
Foreign investment in Indian data centers has dropped hard since June 2026, going from $600 million to $900 million a month to just $100 million.
The last big investment was $130 million back in July, and August saw 0.
This sudden dip is linked to a protest in Balkum, Thane, and concerns raised by Visakhapatnam residents, where locals are worried about heavy water use, power shortages, noise, and compliance concerns by data center projects.
Investors demand data center transparency
People in these cities are calling out the environmental impact of data centers and asking for greater transparency in regulatory and compliance procedures before project execution.
Because of this, investors now want operators to be more open about how much water and energy they use, and what they're doing to stay sustainable.
Despite the funding slowdown, industry leaders like Sunil Gupta say demand is still strong. Operators have already pivoted to renewable-integrated power, advanced liquid and immersion cooling, and AI-driven energy optimization.
