India to overtake China in affluent consumers by 2036, report
India is on track to have more affluent consumers than China by 2036, according to a new NielsenIQ and World Data Lab report.
"Affluent" here means people spending over $90 a day. India's numbers are expected to jump from 26 million in 2026 to a massive 108 million by 2036, an increase of over 80 million.
India is expected to record the largest increase among the countries shown separately in the report.
US still leads with 231 million affluent
China's affluent population will also rise but not as quickly, reaching about 103 million by 2036.

This surge in wealthier shoppers is set to boost demand for premium products focused on quality and status, so expect brands everywhere to pay close attention as India's affluent-consumer base grows and newly affluent consumers seek products that deliver on quality, convenience, or status.
