Oracle, OpenAI scrap Texas AI data center expansion
Oracle and OpenAI have decided not to move forward with expanding their big AI data center near Abilene, Texas.
The main reasons cited were stalled negotiations over financing and shifting requirements.
This expansion was originally part of the massive $500 billion Stargate program launched in early 2025.
Meta might lease the planned expansion site
The expansion would have added a huge 600 megawatts of power to support things like ChatGPT, but now that's off the table.
The site already has eight Oracle data center buildings (two are up and running), and it's pretty important for powering AI apps.
Meta is considering leasing the planned expansion site in Abilene from Crusoe Energy Systems.
NVIDIA chips currently run at this site, but there's competition from AMD trying to get in too.
