Uber hit with ₹9,000cr European fine for automated driver deactivations
Uber just got hit with a massive ₹9,000 crore fine in Europe.
Regulators found that the company used automated systems to shut down driver accounts without enough human checks.
This is raising big questions about how tech decisions can affect real people's jobs.
Penalty ranks among largest GDPR fines
It began back in 2019 when Brahim Ben Ali, a former Uber driver in France, said his account was deactivated in 2019.
He teamed up with around 170 other drivers and a digital rights group to take their case to Dutch regulators.
The penalty is now one of the biggest ever under the European Union's data privacy rules (GDPR), joining fines against companies like Meta and Google.
Uber will appeal the fine
Uber says humans review permanent deactivations and drivers can appeal if they think there's been a mistake.
The company plans to fight the fine, saying it will be appealing it.
