Vedanta chairman Anil Agarwal reaffirms commitment to donate $4.9 billion
Anil Agarwal, chairman of Vedanta Resources, just reaffirmed his promise to give away 75% of his estimated fortune (about $4.9 billion according to Forbes, and roughly $4.2 billion in other reports) to society—a commitment he announced in February 2026.
This heartfelt move comes shortly after the sudden loss of his son Agnivesh, who passed away at 49.
Shift from promoter to trustee
Agarwal used India Energy Week—his first public event since Agnivesh's death—to say he had already announced the renewed pledge, and there he also shared plans to shift from promoter to trustee in the Vedanta Group.
He said he would like to put in ₹10,000-15,000 crore toward education and healthcare projects, reflecting Agnivesh's own hopes for impact in these areas.
Even Prime Minister Modi offered condolences and urged him to keep making a difference.
It's one of India's biggest personal pledges and a reminder that even in tough times, giving back can be powerful.
