Delhi: Man kills wife, dumps body in Mussoorie; arrested

What's the story

In a shocking incident, 36-year-old Lalit Jain of Delhi's Rani Bagh beat his wife Silky to death with a hammer and traveled to Mussoorie to dump her body. He kept it a secret for eight days; the crime was exposed when Jain registered a missing complaint. Delhi Police arrested Lalit and recovered Silky's body with the help of Uttarakhand Police and Indo-Tibetan Border Police.

DCP Khan said: "The couple fought often...Lalit blamed Silky for compelling him to live away from his father. Silky blamed him for giving more importance to his family instead of her parents." He added once such quarrel on 3 December might have triggered the murder.

Lalit, three others drove to Mussoorie with Silky's body

DCP Khan said on 3 December, Lalit attacked his wife and strangulated her after the quarrel and left her half dead. He then called his brother and two other relatives and bludgeoned Silky to death using a hammer. The four of them then packed the dead body in a sack and drove it to Mussoorie, and dumped it in the hills there.

Lalit claimed Silky left house and didn't return

Lalit returned to Delhi and continued with his normal life and even used Silky's phone. DCP Khan added, "Silky was not in the habit of speaking to her parents daily. When her parents called on her number once in between, Lalit told them that she was busy." On 11 December, Lalit registered a complaint at Rani Bagh police station that his wife was missing.

DCP Khan said: "When we spoke to Silky's parents, they said they were unaware of her disappearance. They immediately named Lalit as a suspect. When we interrogated him, he initially tried to mislead us. On sustained interrogation he broke down and finally confessed."
