What's the story

Ravindra Jadeja's absence from the 2010 Indian Premier League (IPL) was not caused by an injury or a disciplinary issue on the field. The Indian all-rounder found himself at the centre of a contractual controversy involving his franchise, Rajasthan Royals. A disagreement over his future and an alleged attempt to negotiate a deal outside the permitted framework ultimately resulted in a suspension.

The contract dispute with Rajasthan Royals

Jadeja had represented Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the first two IPL seasons and played an important role in their title-winning campaign in 2008.

Ahead of the 2010 edition, however, a disagreement emerged over his contract.

The Royals wanted to retain the all-rounder, but Jadeja did not sign the proposed renewal.

He believed his existing contract had expired and that he was free to explore opportunities elsewhere. However, IPL regulations gave RR certain retention rights.

Why Mumbai Indians entered the controversy

The situation escalated when Jadeja held discussions with Mumbai Indians (MI) about a possible contract.

He reportedly exchanged contractual documents with the franchise while still being considered bound by Rajasthan's player agreement.

The IPL governing council viewed this as a violation of its player-trading and operational regulations.

MI were also reprimanded for their involvement in approaching a player who remained under contractual obligations to another franchise.

IPL handed Jadeja a one-year suspension

On February 13, 2010, the IPL governing council announced a one-year playing ban against Jadeja.

The decision came after considering his representation to then BCCI president Shashank Manohar and RR's complaint.

Jadeja challenged the punishment, but a committee headed by Arun Jaitley upheld the suspension on March 27, 2010. Consequently, he missed the entire 2010 IPL season.

How Jadeja returned to the IPL

Jadeja made his IPL comeback in 2011 after serving his suspension.

Interestingly, he did not return to RR or join MI.

Instead, he represented the newly introduced Kochi Tuskers Kerala.

In the 2012 auction, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) secured his services, making him one of the biggest purchases of that auction.

That move eventually marked the beginning of a memorable association with CSK.
