
Delhi hospitals witness rise in sex-change surgeries
What's the story
In Delhi, more people who have gender identity disorder (a conflict between a person's gender and the gender he/she identifies with) are coming forward to undergo sex-change operations. Reportedly, doctors now get 3-4 requests every month as opposed to 1-2 annually a decade ago. South MCD to install 100 toilets to tackle open defecation
In order to bag open defecation-free (ODF) tag for identified sites, South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) plans to install 100 mobile toilet vans at jhuggis/slum clusters across 104 wards. "Densely populated areas, especially those located close to railway lines, have no space for constructing community toilets. That's why we have decided to place mobile toilet vans here." SDMC official said.

Delhi police trained in midwifery during emergencies
The Delhi police (even male cops!) is trained to help deliver babies in emergency-cases. In latest case, a woman went into labour at Old Delhi Railway station and her husband contacted police. "We rushed to the spot on receiving the call. While taking her to hospital, her water broke and we had to get the baby delivered in the van itself," a cop said.

Rural areas to get 24X7 electricity from Aug 15
Taking a U-turn from its earlier stance, power utility firm DHBVN said Gurugram's urban areas are already getting uninterrupted power and government aims to improve power supply in villages. "Our aim is to provide 24-hour electricity to rural areas of district. The DHBVN has chalked out a plan for uninterrupted electricity to villages from August 15," an official said.

Amarnath attack: Cops to deploy sniffer dogs, drones for Kanwarias
The already on-alert Gurugram police has decided to boost the security further along Delhi-Gurugram Expressway for Kanwar yatris. In order to avoid any untoward incidents for devotees, who have set out on foot with holy water from the Ganges, additional forces will be deployed. Apart from that, drone, sniffer dogs and metal detectors will be commissioned. Quick response teams will be on road too.

NDMC told to finish smart city projects ahead of schedule
In order to set an example for country, Union government asked New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) to ensure completion of smart city projects ahead of schedule. The NDMC area, one of the areas chosen to be developed under this project, has a deadline of 2020. The project will include setting up of a command and control centre, smart water and power grids etc.
