'Went through...lot of things': AR Rahman recalls difficult childhood
What's the story
Oscar-winning composer and singer AR Rahman recently got candid about his traumatic childhood in a conversation with Nikhil Kamath on YouTube. He recalled seeing daily trauma as a kid and watching his father work three jobs to support the family. "I think when I was growing up, I went through a lot of things, like my father's and grandmother's deaths."
Father's struggle
Rahman's father worked 3 jobs to support family
Rahman shared that his father was thrown out by his family members and had to work day and night to provide for them. "He started living in a rented house and worked day and night to get us that house." "Working three jobs at the same time, and then because of that, his health went berserk." "That's the dark side of my childhood, and it took a lot of time to get over that trauma."
Mother's influence
Rahman's mother played a crucial role in his life
Rahman also spoke about how his mother encouraged him to pursue music and raised him and his siblings alone after their father's death. "My mother was a single mother, and she was a very confident lady. She took all the pain, and she had to go through so much to protect us." "She was such a strong woman who withstood all kinds of humiliations and single-handedly brought us up."
Musical journey
Rahman's early exposure to music and missed childhood experiences
Rahman revealed that he spent most of his childhood in studios with musicians. "My whole childhood was with 40 or 50-year-olds playing music in the studio. I missed all the fun with friends in school, and then there was no college." Despite these sacrifices, he expressed gratitude for spending time with intelligent people in the studios.
