CBI closes case against guard accused of stealing gold
The CBI has closed the alleged theft case against B Ajith Kumar, a 27-year-old temple guard accused of stealing gold jewelry from a visitor's car in June 2025.
After looking into the case, investigators told the Madurai High Court there was no real evidence he stole anything—meaning the original theft claim didn't hold up.
Kumar died in custody after being brutally tortured
Kumar died in custody after being brutally tortured by police trying to force a confession—an autopsy found dozens of injuries and serious trauma.
Ten police personnel have been named as accused and the CBI has filed a charge sheet (and a supplementary charge sheet) in the custodial death case, and the court has ordered ₹25 lakh compensation for Kumar's family.
The CBI is also investigating what action will be taken against Nikitha, who first accused Kumar of theft.
This case has sparked outrage over police abuse and wrongful accusations.
