'Young Sherlock' creator reveals THIS iconic 'Lagaan' actor's casting
What's the story
The recently released web series Young Sherlock, starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin as the iconic detective Sherlock Holmes, has been receiving positive reviews from audiences. In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, the series creator Matthew Parkhill revealed that his show and the iconic Aamir Khan movie, Lagaan, had a connection. "There's a character, Mrs. Tilcott, in the later episodes, who adopts or looks after a major character in the show. She played Elizabeth (Rachel Shelley) in Lagaan."
Adaptation strategy
How he ensured 'Young Sherlock' is a unique adaptation
To ensure Young Sherlock isn't just another adaptation, Parkhill went back to the original books written by Arthur Conan Doyle and listened to a 72-hour-long audio recording of them. He said, "I thought I will not touch anything after the first book, Studying in Scarlet, and before that is my playground. So that unlocked something and gave me creative permission to play." This approach helped him avoid feeling overwhelmed by the weight of previous adaptations.
Character development
Parkhill reveals Sherlock isn't a detective in his show
Parkhill also shared his vision for Young Sherlock, saying he wanted to portray Sherlock as a human first and a detective later. He explained, "In every Sherlock adaptation before, he's already a detective. But here, if he's not a detective, he's not just going to take a case." He added, "In this show, it is more like he is pulled into the case."
Character exploration
The creator's thoughts on Conan Doyle's original work
Parkhill expressed his fascination with Conan Doyle's version of Sherlock, describing him as "eccentric" and "a loner." He was interested in exploring how this character became who he is in Young Sherlock. He also hinted at the possibility of multiple seasons, saying, "If people love the show, we'll get to do that. I'd love to keep going because it's a beautiful world and it's a wonderful team around us." Meanwhile, the show is streaming on Amazon Prime Video now.
