'4 cities, 8 bombers, ₹20L payment': Doctor module's sinister plan
What's the story
Eight terrorists were planning to carry out a series of blasts in four cities, including Delhi, across India, ANI reported, citing sources. The probe has revealed that the group had planned to split into pairs and carry multiple improvised explosive devices (IEDs) with them. The NIA has formed a dedicated team, led by senior officers, to investigate this incident.
Financial backing
Suspects raised ₹20 lakh for operations
The suspects, including Dr. Muzammil, Dr. Adeel, Umar, and Shaheen, had reportedly raised around ₹20 lakh for their operations. This money was reportedly handed over to Umar, who was driving the i20 that exploded near Red Fort, for operational expenses. They also procured over 20 quintals of NPK fertilizer worth ₹3 lakh from areas near Gurugram and Nuh for IED preparation. "There was also...money dispute between Umar and Mujammil. Umar created a group with 2-4 members on Signal," they said.
Tragic incident
Blast planned on anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition
The blast near Delhi's Red Fort killed at least 13 people and injured many others. In the National Capital Region alone, the suspects had planned to carry out attacks at six locations on December 6, the anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition, NDTV reported. This date was chosen as they wanted to "avenge the Babri Masjid demolition."
Terror group
Suspects linked to Jaish-e-Mohammad terror group
Investigation has also uncovered that Umar and Muzammil had traveled to Turkey, where their handlers are suspected to be operating. Their passports show travel to the country shortly after they joined certain Telegram groups. Investigators have tracked the radicalization of a "doctors' module" to two Telegram groups, one of which is reportedly run by JeM handler Umar bin Khattab in Pakistan. Officials believe the group planned an act similar to the 2008 Mumbai terror.
