What's the story

A massive fire broke out at a bar in Bhubaneswar's Satya Vihar area on Friday. The cause of the blaze is yet to be determined, with officials probing possibilities such as an electrical short circuit or kitchen malfunction. Firefighters reached the scene promptly, battling thick smoke and working tirelessly to control the situation. No casualties have been reported so far.

Emergency response

Firefighters prevent spread, no casualties reported

Firefighters were able to control the fire and stop it from spreading to nearby buildings in the densely populated area. The incident comes days after a devastating nightclub fire in North Goa that killed 25 people. Following the tragedy, Odisha Fire and Emergency Services (OFES) had ordered a statewide audit of all restaurants and standalone establishments with seating capacity above 100.

Audit

Over 80 bars in Bhubaneswar have no fire safety clearance

More than 80 standalone bars and restaurants with bars in Bhubaneswar were found not to have fire safety clearance. According to TNIE, officials at the Excise department said the state capital has approximately 58 hotels and 82 restaurants with bars for customers. While most hotels have certificates from the Odisha Fire and Emergency Service, smaller bars and restaurants do not.
