Journalist shot dead in Tripura, the second in two months

Another journalist was killed in Tripura today, the second in two months. Today's murder was the result of an altercation. Sudip Datta Bhaumik of the local newspaper 'Syandan Patrika' was allegedly shot dead by a jawan in the 2nd Tripura State Rifles (TSR) at RK Nagar, 20km from state capital Agartala. Nandagopal Reang, the jawan involved, has been arrested.

    What happened?

According to Subal Dey, editor of 'Syandan Patrika', senior journalist Bhaumik had gone to meet the Commandant of the 2nd TSR at RK Nagar. He had an appointment due. But at the site, an argument broke out with Reang, the commandant's PSO who was outside his office. During the squabble, Reang took out his gun and shot Bhaumik. He died on the spot.

In September, a journalist was killed while covering the agitation

The Tripura agitation claimed another life when 27-year-old journalist Santanu Bhowmik was abducted and murdered. Bhowmik, who worked with Din Raat channel, was kidnapped while he was covering a road blockade by the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura at Mandai, near Agartala. He was later found severely injured and was declared brought dead by the doctors at a local hospital.

Over 27 Indian journalists have been killed since 1992

The message is clear. Don't talk about controversial issues or you would talk no more. Bhaumik is the latest to join a long list of journalists who have been killed. One of the latest murders was of Gauri Lankesh, who was shot outside her house on September 4. As per the Committee to Protect Journalists, over 27 Indian journalists have been killed since 1992.
