Assam eviction drive leaves 100 families without homes
India
About 100 families in Assam's Nagaon district have been evicted from government land they'd called home since the 1990s.
The eviction happened in Bhakatgaon, with most people moving out after advance notice from officials.
District Commissioner Devashish Sharma shared that the last few families left during the operation itself.
Part of a bigger push to reclaim public land
This isn't a one-off—Assam's government has been stepping up efforts to clear encroachments across Nagaon under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma since 2021, mainly affecting Bengali-speaking Muslim communities.
More eviction drives are planned soon in places like Salanibari and Ahom Gaon.
