Himanta Biswa Sarma: News

Himanta Biswa Sarma, born on February 1, 1969, in Jorhat, is an Indian politician from Assam belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). As of 2021, he is the Chief Minister of Assam. Sarma began his career at a young age when he was still pursuing a degree in law from the Government Law College, Guwahati, by taking an active part in the All Assam Students' Union (AASU). Later, he joined the Congress in 1996 and fought his first election in 2001 from Jalukbari, and won a seat in the Assam Assembly. Between 2002 and 2014, Sarma held some key portfolios (state as well as Cabinet) as Minister of State for Finance, Health, Agriculture, and Education, among others. Owing to differences with former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi, he quit all the positions in 2014 and subsequently joined the BJP in 2015. He was instrumental in the BJP's win in the 2016 Assembly elections and was made the North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convener in the same year. He also held several key portfolios in the Cabinet of former CM Sarbananda Sonowal before being appointed as Chief Minister of Assam in 2021.
