Assam transfers ₹9,000 to 4 million families under 'Orunodoi' scheme
Assam pulled off a record single-day disbursement in the state, sending ₹9,000 each to nearly four million families under its Orunodoi scheme, all in a single day.
This payout covers four months' support plus a little extra for Bohag Bihu celebrations.
Sarma calls scheme a game-changer
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the transfer took place on March 10, 2026, calling Orunodoi a game-changer for low-income families.
The scheme gives ₹1,250 monthly to women who qualify under the National Food Security Act and has grown from about 1.8 million recipients during COVID-19 to roughly 3.7-4.0 million today.
While Congress accused the government of trying to win votes before April elections, Sarma insists it's about real empowerment, and many say these funds are a lifeline for families who need them most.
