IGI airport's revamped Terminal 2 to reopen for operations tomorrow
What's the story
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu on Saturday inaugurated the newly renovated Terminal 2 (T2) of the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in New Delhi. The terminal, which was shut for renovations in April this year, will reopen for flight operations from Sunday (October 26). With its reopening, Air India and IndiGo are expected to operate around 120 domestic flights daily from the upgraded terminal.
Capacity expansion
Terminal has capacity to handle 15 million passengers annually
The revamped T2 terminal has an annual capacity of handling 15 million passengers. The terminal is a key part of IGIA, India's largest airport, which now has three terminals (T1, T2, and T3) and four runways. It handles over 1,300 flight movements daily and can accommodate more than 100 million passengers annually.
Renovation details
Major upgrades at renovated terminal
The renovated T2 terminal features a Self-Baggage Drop (SBD) facility, six new Passenger Boarding Bridges (PBBs), and major mechanical and electrical upgrades. These changes are aimed at reducing queues and wait times for passengers. The upgraded terminal will also allow for more balanced airline operations across terminals, enhancing efficiency and convenience for travelers.
Future prospects
Winter schedule expected to increase flight movements by 13%
The reopening of T2 comes just in time for the Winter Schedule 2025, which is expected to see a 13% increase in flight movements compared to last winter. Naidu said the Delhi airport can handle more than 100 million passengers annually with efficient use of space and highlighted its growing focus on sustainability, including the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
