Explosion near Red Fort kills 13; several states on high-alert

An explosion occurred in a car near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station in Delhi on Monday evening, killing 13 people. Delhi Police sources said the blast occurred in a Hyundai i20 car around 7:00pm when it came to a stop at a red traffic light near the metro station. "The blast took place in a slow-moving vehicle.... There were occupants in the car. The blast damaged cars nearby," Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha told reporters.

The cause of the explosion is still unknown, but police sources told news channels that the blast was powerful. "I have never heard such a loud explosion ever...I fell three times due to the explosion. It felt as if we were all going to die," a local shopkeeper told ANI. Another eyewitness told the news agency that he saw body parts spread on the road. "We saw someone's hand on the road...I can't explain it in words," he said.

Shah visits Lok Nayak Hospital
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the National Security Guard have joined the investigation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been briefed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who stated that all alternatives will be investigated immediately and the results will be made public. Shah also visited the Lok Nayak Hospital, where he held a meeting with Delhi Police CP Satish Golcha and other officials.

Conspiracy to terrorize Delhi
The explosion occurred on the same day that police busted an interstate terror module linked to banned groups, recovering over 2,900 kilos of suspected ammonium nitrate and an additional 2,500 kg of the explosive-making ingredient from Faridabad in Haryana. According to India Today, officials claimed that there was a conspiracy to terrorize Delhi with hundreds of IEDs made from the confiscated material.

Several states placed on alert
In the wake of the blast, several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Chandigarh, Kolkata and Mumbai, have been placed on high alert. Uttar Pradesh ADG Law and Order Amitabh Yash said the DGP has asked senior officials to increase security at sensitive religious sites, sensitive districts, and border areas. Security is also being increased at important places in Mumbai. The CISF has also issued a high alert across the country, including airports, Delhi Metro, heritage sites, government buildings, among others.
