What's the story

The Israeli Prime Minister's Office has confirmed that the body received on Sunday is that of Lieutenant Hadar Goldin, an Israeli soldier killed in Gaza during the 2014 war. The confirmation came after Hamas returned what it claimed was Goldin's body to the International Red Cross, which then transferred it to the Israeli military. Goldin's family has spent years pushing for his return, citing Israel's commitment to the principle of not leaving anyone behind in conflict.

Family response

'We brought Lt. Hadar Goldin - our son'

Goldin's father, Simcha Goldin, expressed relief at his son's return during a televised statement. He emphasized Israel's commitment to its soldiers and values. "We brought Lt Hadar Goldin, our son, a fighter, to be buried in Israel," he said. His mother, Leah, also spoke about the importance of friendship, comradeship, the right to burial in Israel, and human dignity during this difficult time for their family.

War details

Goldin was killed during a truce

Goldin was killed on August 1, 2014, as a ceasefire was coming into effect and just days before Israel withdrew its troops from Gaza. At the time, the Israeli military had invoked the controversial Hannibal Directive to prevent his kidnapping. This directive allows Israeli forces to take extreme measures to thwart abductions, even at the risk of endangering those being abducted. Goldin's kidnapping led to major Israeli airstrikes in Rafah.

Family solace

Prime minister acknowledges pain of Goldin's family

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum said Goldin's return "offers some measure of comfort to a family that has lived with agonizing uncertainty and doubt for over 11 years." Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also acknowledged the pain endured by Goldin's family and the entire Israeli community. He said they are now united in knowing that Goldin has been brought back home.

Ceasefire terms

Four deceased hostages still unreturned

Goldin's return was part of the first phase of a US-brokered ceasefire agreement. Under this agreement, Hamas was to return all hostages, including those who had died. However, Israeli intelligence believes that Hamas may not be able to locate and return all deceased hostages in Gaza. This leaves four deceased hostages still unreturned: three Israelis killed on October 7, 2023, and a Thai citizen kidnapped during the attack.
