Maulana Abdul Salim, a cleric from Bihar, has been booked after allegedly making disrespectful comments about Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's mother at a religious event.
The complaint was filed by local BJP leader Ravi Mishra in Balrampur on March 7.
Police confirmed Salim is facing charges for public mischief and insult under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
BJP MP calls cleric's remarks 'unacceptable'
Salim's remarks reportedly stirred up anger among BJP supporters and members of the Hindu community; the complaint also alleged he attempted to incite people against laws related to cow slaughter.
Protests broke out in Balrampur and Lucknow, with BJP workers demanding strict action.
BJP MP Ravi Kishan called the remarks 'condemnable and unacceptable,' saying, 'In Indian culture, a mother is regarded as the highest symbol of respect and reverence.'
Police say the investigation is ongoing and further steps will depend on what they find.
