Cyclone Ditwah floods nearly 90,000 hectares of farmland in Tamil Nadu

India

Cyclone Ditwah hit Tamil Nadu's Cauvery delta hard this weekend, flooding about 89,431 hectares of farmland.
The worst damage was in Mayiladuthurai and Nagapattinam, with thousands of fields underwater.
Other districts like Thanjavur and Tiruvarur were also affected, leaving many communities struggling to cope.

Heavy rain leads to damage and loss

Relentless rain caused major waterlogging—Mayiladuthurai alone saw over 70cm fall in a single 24-hour period.
The flooding damaged homes and killed livestock. Tragically, two people lost their lives: a young man electrocuted by a snapped power line and another in a house wall collapse.
With blocked drains making things worse in some villages, locals are now facing tough recovery days ahead.
