Delhi and Centre plan ₹4,500cr Ganga transfer to clean Yamuna
Delhi and the central government are teaming up to clean the Yamuna River by bringing in fresh water from the Upper Ganga Canal.
This massive ₹4,500 crore project, discussed under Union Home Minister Amit Shah, will send 500 million gallons a day through a new 29-km twin pipeline or canal system, hoping to tackle pollution and give the river a much-needed boost.
Officials say Uttar Pradesh irrigation unaffected
The project replaces an earlier plan that was scrapped after Uttar Pradesh raised concerns.
Now, officials promise Uttar Pradesh's irrigation won't be affected since diverted water returns downstream.
The construction is set to take three years once planning wraps up this October.
With Delhi facing a big water shortfall in the Yamuna, this move aims to restore flow and fulfill promises for cleaner rivers, plus it checks off environmental orders from the National Green Tribunal.
