Delhi Police pushes back on Umar Khalid's bail in riot case
Delhi Police has opposed bail for Umar Khalid and others accused in the 2020 North East Delhi riots conspiracy.
They're charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and police say the accused have been delaying their trial even after spending five years in custody.
The police suggested that if things move smoothly, the case could wrap up within two years.
Serious allegations and video evidence shared
Police presented CCTV footage from February 2020 as proof of a planned conspiracy, including speeches by co-accused Sharjeel Imam, which police argued instigated people as part of a violent conspiracy.
Witnesses also reported attempts to destroy cameras to block investigations.
Officials stressed these aren't minor charges—Khalid and others are accused of plotting against the government, with claims that some even funded the riots.
The Supreme Court will hear more arguments next Monday.
