Delhi riots: Police push back on bail for Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam
Delhi Police have told the Supreme Court they're against granting bail to activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, calling the 2020 riots an "attack on the sovereignty of the nation" rather than just a spontaneous protest.
The police say there were efforts to stir up communal tensions that went beyond the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) demonstrations.
What else is happening?
Police argue that Imam's speeches were meant to spark unrest in multiple cities, not just Delhi.
They also claim delays in the trial are due to actions by the accused, even as social media buzzes with talk of unfair treatment.
Besides Khalid and Imam, activists Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, and Rehman are facing serious anti-terror charges related to organizing the riots, which left 53 dead and over 700 injured during protests against CAA and NRC.
