Diwali pollution spike expected in big cities
This Diwali, big cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Bengaluru are expected to see a sharp rise in air pollution, especially around October 21.
The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology says PM2.5 levels—tiny particles that can harm your lungs—will jump because of firecrackers and other festive activities.
What about other cities?
Delhi's air quality is already "unhealthy" at 157 AQI, and Kolkata isn't far behind.
In previous years, Diwali pushed Delhi's AQI over 300, which is considered "very unhealthy."
Mumbai and Pune could see PM2.5 levels hit 250-300 ug/m3 this year.
With calm weather trapping pollution near the ground, breathing could get tough—especially for anyone with asthma or heart issues.
Authorities may consider advising people to go easy on the firecrackers to help everyone breathe a little easier.
