DNA identification of Air India crash victims underway

India

Three days after Air India Flight AI171 crashed near Ahmedabad, authorities have identified 32 victims through DNA testing and handed over 14 bodies to their families. The London-bound flight, carrying 242 people, crashed just after takeoff—leaving 241 dead and 29 people on the ground killed, including five MBBS students.

How the identification process was carried out

Because of the severe damage, DNA testing was crucial. Families provided samples for comparison, while over 230 teams coordinated with relatives—many from Gujarat and Rajasthan—to help bring loved ones home.

Former Gujarat CM among the victims

Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was confirmed among the victims. His remains have been returned to his family—a moment that's been especially moving for many across the country still mourning this tragedy.
