The Union government has spent ₹557.5 crore on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's foreign trips since 2021, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) revealed in Parliament on Thursday. The expenditure includes ₹36.1 crore in 2021, ₹55.8 crore in 2022, and ₹93.6 crore in 2023. The expenditure on PM Modi's foreign trips further increased to ₹109.5 crore in 2024 and ₹187.8 crore in 2025. In 2026 alone, the government has already spent ₹74.5 crore on six trips covering 13 countries.
Rising costs
Most expensive trip to the United States in February 2025
The most expensive trip during this period was to the United States in February 2025, which cost over ₹25.5 crore, according to information provided by MEA to Parliament.
The largest expenditure in 2026 was on PM Modi's trip to Norway in May, which cost ₹17 crore.
The MEA did not specify the exact breakdown of these expenses but had earlier mentioned that they include accommodation for the prime minister's delegation, transportation, security and hardware, venue charges, and "miscellaneous" expenses.
Travel itinerary
Countries PM Modi visited since 2021
Since 2021, PM Modi has visited several countries. In 2022, he went to Germany, Denmark, France, Nepal, the UAE, Japan, and Uzbekistan.
The following year saw him visiting Papua New Guinea, among other countries. His travels continued in 2024 with trips to the UAE and Bhutan, among others.
So far in this year (2026), he has visited Italy and Israel, among others.
Investment value
FDI received during PM's foreign visits
The data was released in response to a question from an Opposition MP about the expenditure on PM Modi's foreign visits and foreign direct investment (FDI) India received through commitments made during these trips.
The MEA also listed memoranda of understanding signed during these visits between April 2021 and December 2025, valuing the FDI received through them at $381.8 billion (₹36.3 lakh crore).
