Farmers protest US-India farm trade deal in Mysuru

India

Farmers in Mysuru, Karnataka, hit the streets on Monday to oppose a proposed free trade agreement between India and the US.
Led by local farmer groups, they rallied outside MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar's office and handed over a memo asking him to push back against the deal in Parliament.

Why are farmers worried?

The big concern is that duty-free imports of crops like maize, rice, cotton, soybeans, pulses—and even dairy and chicken—from the US could flood Indian markets.
Farmers say this would drive down prices for their produce and threaten their livelihoods.
With ongoing struggles like low crop prices, rising costs, and recent US tariffs on Indian goods adding pressure, many see this deal as another blow.
Nationwide protests are planned for August 13 as farmers call for stronger protection of their interests—something Prime Minister Modi has promised won't be compromised.
