Five cheetah cubs born in India after nearly 7 decades
India just hit a major milestone: the cheetah population is now at 53, thanks to five new cubs born to Jwala at Kuno National Park on March 9, 2026.
This follows another recent birth in February and marks real progress for Project Cheetah, which started with just eight cheetahs from Namibia in 2022.
Cheetahs making a comeback
Cheetahs became extinct in India nearly seven decades ago, so seeing their numbers bounce back is a huge deal for conservation.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav called it a "proud moment" for wildlife conservation.
With monitoring and careful management at Kuno (including radio collars and quarantine/health checks), these big cats are getting a real shot at thriving again, even with challenges like disease and competition from leopards.
