Fugitive offenders owe ₹58,000 crore to Indian banks

India

Turns out, some of India's most high-profile fugitives—like Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi—owe banks a whopping ₹58,000 crore.
The government shared in Parliament that efforts to recover this money have brought back about ₹19,187 crore so far, mostly by seizing and selling off assets.

Who's on the list—and what's been recovered?

Vijay Mallya tops the chart with a debt of ₹22,065 crore; over ₹14,000 crore has been recovered from him.
Nirav Modi owes ₹9,656 crore but only ₹545 crore has come back so far.
Out of 15 major offenders named by the government, two have negotiated settlements with lenders—showing that recovery is possible but still a work in progress.
