The 25-year-old wife of the maulvi was quoted in Indian Express as, "It happened around 11 am when I was offering namaz at my mother's house, not far from mine. My husband is innocent, but some people and media channels are saying he has committed a crime." She claimed her husband was not around when the police recovered the victim from the madrasa.
Talking about the rise of communal tension in the locality, the maulvi's wife said there was no discrimination till now. But since the incident, no Hindu neighbor has spoken to her. Saying they might relocate to their house in Bihar, she added, "They said that they will burn him (the maulvi) on the street. How can we live here now?"
The 10-year-old victim's father registered a police complaint on March 21, when the girl went missing. The police procured CCTV footage that showed the accused juvenile taking her with him. BJP minister Manoj Tiwari met the victim's family and promised swift action. He said he would speak to UP CM Yogi Adityanath seeking a thorough investigation in the case.
