Gujarat HC grants divorce over wife's refusal to eat onion-garlic

India

A marriage in Gujarat ended up in court after a long-running fight over food—specifically, the wife's choice not to eat onion or garlic because of her Swaminarayan faith.
The couple split back in 2007, and after years apart, the husband filed for divorce.
This May, a family court granted it, and now the High Court has agreed: their dietary clash was enough to call it quits.

When food choices break a marriage

The preparation of separate meals due to dietary differences led to tension in the household, and things got so tough that his wife left with their child.
He called it cruelty and desertion.
The courts sided with him and also ordered him to pay ₹13 lakh as maintenance.

High court says: It's really about the food

When the wife appealed, she later told judges she didn't mind ending things anymore.
The High Court pointed out that their different eating habits were at the heart of their problems and finalized both the divorce and maintenance payment for her.
