What's the story

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has achieved a historic milestone with its IL-76MD heavy-lift aircraft landing at the Mudh-Nyoma airbase in Ladakh. Located at an elevation of 13,629 feet, this is the highest-altitude landing ever recorded globally. The landmark event took place on Friday and was announced by the IAF on Saturday.

Strategic location

The strategic importance of Nyoma airbase

The Nyoma airbase, which is only 23km from the contested Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, was inaugurated just a year ago.

The landing of the IL-76MD aircraft at this altitude is a testament to India's growing strategic airlift capabilities.

The IAF praised the achievement as "a remarkable demonstration of the aircraft's enduring capability," adding that it was backed by "the exceptional skill, precision and professionalism" of its crew.

Infrastructure development

The ₹218 crore project was completed

The Nyoma airbase is a major infrastructure project that was completed at a cost of ₹218 crore. The project was spearheaded by a team of women officers and included upgrading the airstrip into a full-fledged base.

With a 2.7-km runway, it can handle fighter jets, transport planes, and helicopters.

The base also has allied infrastructure such as hangars and an air traffic control building.

Border fortification

India has been bolstering infrastructure along the LAC

Since the military standoff with China began in April 2020, India has focused on building infrastructure along its borders. This includes roads, bridges, tunnels, and airfields to improve military mobility and logistics.

The IAF's other two airstrips at Daulat Beg Oldi (16,614 feet) and Fukche (13,000 feet) were also reactivated in May 2008 and November 2008.

Strategic focus

Other high-altitude airbases in Ladakh

The Nyoma airbase is the fourth such base in Ladakh, joining others in Leh, Kargil, and Thoise.

The central government has been focusing on infrastructure development at airfields and Advanced Landing Grounds (ALGs) along the LAC.

This includes boosting infrastructure at Daulat Beg Oldi ALG, which is located close to the LAC at an altitude of 16,700 feet and known as the highest airfield in the world.
