Hyderabad: Woman loses ₹3.38L to online marriage proposal scam

India

A 47-year-old woman from Hyderabad lost ₹3.38 lakh after a man, pretending to be a UK-based doctor, befriended her on WhatsApp and convinced her to open bank accounts and get SIM cards in her name.
He then had her send ATM cards and passbooks to a fake "UK Affairs Office" in Delhi, all under the pretense of marriage.

How the scam worked—and what police advise

The scammer sent fake visa and marriage documents while constantly demanding money for things like visa fees, luggage costs, hotel stays, and supposed emergencies.
When she stopped hearing from him but started getting suspicious calls from new numbers, she reported it to the police.
Hyderabad Cyber Crime Unit is now investigating and has warned everyone: don't trust random online proposals or share personal info without verifying—always double-check before sending money or documents online.
