Jaishankar urges stronger rules to stop bio-weapons misuse
India's Foreign Minister S Jaishankar wants tougher global rules to prevent the misuse of biological weapons.
At the 50th anniversary of the Biological Weapons Convention, he warned that threats from bioweapons are no longer just theory—bad actors could actually use them, especially as biotech advances.
Bioterrorism, he noted, is a serious concern that the international community has to be adequately prepared for.
India pushes for fairer, smarter biosecurity
Jaishankar pointed out that current global rules have big gaps—like no real system to check if countries are following them.
He suggested India's approach: tighter oversight on risky research and better management of dangerous agents.
He also called for more support for countries in the Global South, whose weaker health systems make them extra vulnerable, saying they should help shape future biosecurity policies so everyone stays safer.
