Kanpur Police arrest 6 in multiple hospitals kidney transplant scam
Kanpur police just uncovered a major kidney transplant scam running across several hospitals, arresting six people, including five doctors and an ambulance operator.
Among those caught are Dr. Surjeet Singh Ahuja, his wife Dr. Preeti Ahuja, and Shivam Agrawal, who allegedly pretended to be a doctor to find donors for illegal surgeries.
Raids find about 50 illegal transplants
Raids at three hospitals turned up a substantial quantity of medicines and cash worth ₹1.75 lakh, with evidence pointing to around 50 illegal kidney transplants over the past two years.
The operation reportedly bought kidneys from people in tough financial spots for ₹5-6 lakh and sold them for up to ₹1 crore each.
Police believe more hospitals in Kanpur and Lucknow could be involved, and investigations (and arrests) are still underway.
