Lok Sabha to introduce 'Health Security and National Security Cess Bill'

India

Lok Sabha is about to roll out the "Health Security and National Security Cess Bill, 2025," aiming to boost funding for both defense and public health.
The plan is to add a new cess (basically an extra tax) on certain goods and manufacturing, especially after recent events like Operation Sindoor and the push for a Future Warfare Fund.
The money raised will go toward military needs and public health programs, which support around 55 crore people who need it most.

What's changing with taxes?

Right now, there's already a 4% "Health and Education Cess" on income tax, plus extra cesses on things like petrol, diesel, and tobacco—all of which the central government keeps (something states aren't thrilled about).
The government also wants to update the old Central Excise Act so it fits better with today's GST system.
But don't worry—this update will focus only on existing taxed items like petroleum products and tobacco; it won't expand taxes to new areas.
