Maharashtra to remove 1cr voters from rolls: Why, how
Maharashtra is getting a major voter list update. The state branch of the Election Commission has kicked off a pre-Special Intensive Revision (pre-SIR) and expects to weed out about 1 crore duplicate and deceased voters from the rolls.
Over 1 lakh officers are going door-to-door with pre-printed forms, matching today's list of nearly 10 crore voters against records from 2002.
How will the process work?
Accurate voter lists mean fairer elections—no more "ghost" voters or names that shouldn't be there.
This massive cleanup also aims to fix years of outdated info (like over 47,000 people listed as over 100 years old).
If your name isn't linked to the old records, you'll need to produce documents to establish eligibility, such as identity or citizenship papers; the ECI lists Aadhaar among indicative identity documents but the Supreme Court has said Aadhaar is not proof of citizenship.
The ECI has set timelines for the revision process so everyone gets a chance to set things right before the next big vote.
