Maoist linked to train blast in Assam killed in encounter

India

Apil Murmu, a 40-year-old suspected Maoist, was shot dead by police in Kokrajhar, Assam later that week.
He was suspected of involvement in planting an IED that exploded on a railway track on October 23, 2025, disrupting train services across Lower Assam and parts of north Bengal.
The encounter happened when police acted on a tip about militants hiding nearby.

Murmu was involved in similar train blast last year

Murmu had been involved in insurgency since 2015 across Assam and Jharkhand, including a similar train blast in Jharkhand last year.
After the National Santhal Liberation Army (NSLA) surrendered, he formed his own splinter group before joining Maoists.
During the operation, police recovered a pistol, two grenades, and his ID cards from the spot.
The search continues for about 10 other militants who escaped during the encounter as both Assam and Jharkhand police ramp up their joint probe into the blasts.
