Explained: Why Iran has suspended visa-free entry for Indians
What's the story
Iran has suspended the visa waiver facility for Indian citizens with ordinary passports, effective from November 22. The decision comes after several cases of Indian nationals being lured to Iran on false employment promises and onward transit to third countries. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India confirmed this development, stating that many Indians were kidnapped for ransom upon arrival in Iran.
Advisory issued
MEA's warning and Iran's response
The MEA had earlier warned that the visa-free entry to Iran was only for tourism purposes and was valid for 15 days every six months. The ministry had cautioned against bogus job scams and asked citizens to remain vigilant. "These individuals were tricked into journeying to Iran by taking advantage of the visa waiver facility available for ordinary Indian passport holders," the MEA said in a statement.
Suspension rationale
Iran's decision to suspend visa waiver facility
Iran has now decided to suspend the visa waiver facility for Indian citizens in light of these incidents. The decision is aimed at preventing further misuse of the facility by criminal elements. From November 22, Indian nationals with ordinary passports will have to obtain a visa for entry or transit through Iran.
Earlier warnings
MEA's previous caution about travel to Iran
In September, the MEA had also cautioned Indian citizens about potential risks of traveling to Iran for work. MEA Official Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had noted that several Indians have been targeted by criminal gangs and kidnapped upon arrival in Iran. "There have been a number of recent cases involving Indian citizens who have been lured to travel to Iran on false promises of employment," Jaiswal said.
