India
The IMD has put out yellow heat wave alerts for several Maharashtra districts, and issued a heat wave warning for Mumbai after the city recorded a scorching 38.9 degrees Celsius, almost six degrees above normal.
Other cities such as Pune and Lohegaon also saw unusually high temperatures, with the heat expected to stick around for a few more days.
IMD warns of elevated heatwave risk through March-May season
This early heat wave isn't just uncomfortable: it could stress water supplies and increase power demand, and affect agriculture.
The IMD warns of elevated heatwave risk through the March-May season, though forecasters say some rain could be possible after March 12 if wind patterns shift.
