President rejects mercy plea in 2012 Maharashtra child murder case
President Droupadi Murmu has turned down the mercy plea of Ravi Ashok Ghumare, who was convicted for the horrific kidnapping, rape, and murder of a two-year-old girl in Maharashtra back in 2012.
This is her third rejection of such a petition since becoming President.
The Supreme Court had already upheld his death sentence, calling out the shocking and brutal nature of his crime.
How the case unfolded
Ghumare lured the toddler away with chocolate before committing the crime on March 6, 2012, in Jalna city.
He was sentenced to death by a trial court in 2015—a decision later supported by both the Bombay High Court and Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court described his actions as those of a "dirty and perverted mind, showcasing a horrifying tale of brutality," underlining just how deeply disturbing this case was.
