SC tells Kerala Governor: Act on university VC report soon
The Supreme Court has nudged Kerala's Governor Rajendra Arlekar to finally act on a key report about picking Vice-Chancellors for two state universities.
This report, put together by ex-SC judge Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and sent over by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, has been sitting with the Governor—who also happens to be the Chancellor—but nothing's moved yet.
Why all the fuss?
Justice J.B. Pardiwala called the report "not just an ordinary piece of paper" and emphasized the court's urging for timely action, since the delay is blocking new VCs at APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University and Digital Sciences University.
The holdup partly comes from disagreements between the Governor and CM over how candidates were picked, but the court made it clear everyone had agreed on this process earlier.
The case gets another hearing next week, so hopefully things get unstuck soon.
