Sonam Wangchuk's wife moves SC against his detention

India

Sonam Wangchuk, a well-known climate activist and educator, has been in Jodhpur jail since September 26, 2025.
His wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) and is seeking his immediate release.
The court will hear the case on October 6.

Petition calls Wangchuk's detention 'arbitrary and unconstitutional'

Wangchuk was detained after protests in Leh demanding statehood for Ladakh turned violent, leading to four deaths and 90 injuries.
Authorities claim he incited violence, but his wife says he's being denied family visits, medication, and clear reasons for his detention.
The petition calls his detention arbitrary and unconstitutional—citing violations of Articles 14, 19, 21, and 22—and also raises concerns about harassment of staff and students at Wangchuk's institute (HIAL).
Angmo wants the court to demand full disclosure of why he's being held and ensure an end to any intimidation of his associates.
