Supreme Court intervenes in Jantar Mantar sexual assault claims
The Supreme Court has jumped in to address sexual assault claims from the July 20 student protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar.
After Senior Advocate Shobha Gupta spoke up for a safe way for alleged victims to file complaints, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant assured everyone that the issue was already on their radar.
Justice R. Subhash Reddy heads HPEC
A special committee, HPEC, led by former Supreme Court judge Justice R. Subhash Reddy, will examine the allegations while police authorities, paramilitary forces and other investigating agencies will preserve all CCTV footage from the protest and furnish the record to the committee.
To help protect alleged victims' identities, Gupta suggested complaints go through a district judge or another designated authority.
The committee will submit interim findings periodically so progress stays clear and steady.
