Supreme Court questions anonymous political donations to parties

India

The Supreme Court has asked the government and top political parties like BJP and Congress to respond to a petition challenging a rule that lets them accept cash donations under ₹2,000 without revealing who gave the money.
The petitioner argues this loophole keeps voters in the dark about who funds parties, which isn't great for transparency.
The case will be back in court in about four weeks.

Petition pushes for full disclosure and more transparency

Filed by Khem Singh Bhati, the plea wants all political donations—no matter how small—to be made public, with strict checks by the Election Commission and tax authorities.
It also calls for penalties if parties don't follow these rules.
Bhati says voters deserve to know where party money comes from so they can make informed choices, especially after last year's Supreme Court ruling against secret electoral bonds.
